The heart is a hollow muscular organ of somewhat conical form lying between the lungs in the middle mediastinum, enclosed in the pericardium; it is the central organ of the blood vascular system, pumping blood through the arteries by its contraction, and is divided by septa into right and left halves, each with an atrium and a ventricle. One source (Gray's Anatomy 1918, Angiology) covers its definition, structure (chambers, valves, wall and conduction tissue, coronary vessels, pericardium), mechanism (development, cardiac cycle, fetal circulation), size and cycle timings, and the two malformations the text names.
