How it works

[low] MongoDB Charts is still on the roadmap with plans to work on it next year, and the team is defining requirements for an import/export API aimed to launch in Q1 next year, though a previous Q4 target ticket is closed without updates. [low] Users request an API endpoint to update existing dashboards and charts without changing IDs, or to read dashboards for cross-environment updates, and prefer fixing the ID issue before full API development, with some suggesting git repo integration for updates. [low] Users currently work around the lack of an update API by exporting dashboards as .charts files, manually editing JSON datasources, and re-importing, which requires tracking IDs per environment and causes downtime due to manual ID remapping. [low] Exporting and importing dashboards is planned as the first API to be built, with a launch aimed for a couple of months, but importing currently changes dashboard and chart IDs, preventing updates to existing charts. [low] MongoDB Charts was chosen over Power BI because it allows embedding query parameters in the token when embedding dashboards. Sources: https://www.mongodb.com/community/forums/t/when-the-mongodb-charts-api-will-be-available/267537 [source]

Comparisons and alternatives

[low] MongoDB Charts provides fast, native dashboarding directly inside Atlas with limited customization compared to full BI platforms, while Data Explorer offers quick schema exploration and Compass is suited for developers needing visual schema views but not executive dashboards. Facts and statements

[low] The on-prem version of MongoDB Charts was discontinued in September 2021 and is the only unsupported version, while the Atlas-supported version is continuously updated with new features. [low] The Atlas CLI sub-command is automatically generated from the MongoDB Atlas Admin API, offering full coverage via the 'atlas api <tag> <operationId>' command where both parameters must be in camelCase. Sources: https://www.mongodb.com/docs/atlas/cli/current/command/atlas-api.md [source]
[low] The Atlas CLI API command allows specifying the API version, defaulting to the latest or configured profile value, and outputs JSON by default, though certain endpoints like logs require the --out option for binary data.
